On July 8, 2015, Volkswagen of America was thrilled to
announce that the 2015 VW Golf TDI Clean Diesel had set a new GUINNESS WORLD
RECORDS achievement for “Lowest fuel consumption—48 U.S. contiguous States for
a non-hybrid” vehicle. The 2015 VW Golf TDI,
which is a part of the Golf family that earned 2015 North American Car of the Year
honors, spent 16 days traveling 8,233.5 miles around the lower 48 states all
while averaging a record-breaking 81.17 mpg and spending only $294.98! It beat
out the previous mark of 77.99 mpg by more than 3 mpg and also beat out the
hybrid record of 74.34 mpg. Keep reading to find out more!
The 2015 VW Golf TDI left from VWoA headquarters in Herndon,
Virginia on Monday June 22, and hit all 48 contiguous states before returning
to Virginia on July 7. The vehicle was driven by Wayne Gerdes, an automotive
journalist and founder of cleanmpg.com, was the primary driver during the trip.
He was accompanied by Bob Winger, an electronics engineer who has long been
involved in conservation and energy projects. Mr. Gerdes had this to say about
the trip:
Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing. I
don’t think people realize the potential mileage you can get from them. In our
experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using
just a few simple fuel-saving techniques.
Michael Horn, President and CEO, VWoA, Inc., had this to say
about the record being set:
Covering 8,233.5 miles on just 101.43 gallons of Clean
Diesel fuel is a remarkable accomplishment, and solid proof of the efficiency
and fuel economy of Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel vehicles. Whether on a long
road trip, or even in daily commuting, the great mileage and long range of our
TDI models is a pure convenience factor that few other vehicles on sale can
match. It’s a simple formula: Less Stop, More Go!
